FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you take insurance?
No, we do not take insurance at this time, but we would be happy to supply you with receipts for insurance reimbursement.
Are you licensed therapists?
We are not licensed therapists, thus we do not offer clinical care. If that is something you feel you need, we would be happy to recommend other professionals that we respect.
What types of payments do you take?
We take Cash, Check, PayPal, Venmo and Zelle. We take these payments at the beginning of each session together.
What do you do about cancellations?
We would appreciate 24-hour notice as a general courtesy, but you will only be charged your regular hourly rate for missing an appointment if you give less than 1-hour notice, do not show up for your appointment, or do not call regarding your scheduled appointment.
What is the usual number of sessions?
We believe that committing to 6 sessions may be a good place to start. However, we do not have a specific amount of sessions offered, but individualize for each client’s needs. After that we will have regular “update discussions” to evaluate how you are doing and how much more time you feel is needed, as well as offer our advice about what we think would be most helpful for you.
What is the difference between spiritual direction and counseling?
Some may be wondering what the difference between spiritual direction and counseling really is, and how you will know what is the best fit for you. Depending on your vantage point and personality, you may find you need both at different times or seasons.
Spiritual direction focuses specifically on your spiritual life with God. Though at times we may talk about life’s issues and how they are affecting your relationship with God, mostly we will be taking a deep dive into questions of faith, God’s character, and your unique understanding of them and scripture. We will also take a pinpointed look at how you spend your time with God, seeking to experience the spiritual disciplines and how you can integrate them into your life in meaningful ways. In spiritual direction, the director is very focused on listening to the Holy Spirit on your behalf and less focused on providing answers or pinpointed advice. The tone of spiritual direction tends to be quieter and is more deeply steeped in prayer by both director and directee, with the directee ready to ask the hard questions of faith and sit in the struggle and mystery of God.
Counseling tends to focus on a person’s whole life, looking at the details of family upbringing, current relationships, and current struggles with life’s issues and circumstances. At Equinox, we focus our counseling time with a Biblical perspective, and we will indeed be talking about your relationship with God and how it should influence the whole of your life. Our counseling method uses a prayerful approach of seeking the Spirit of God to reveal and disrupt sin patterns and lead you to a space of increasing freedom and light in all of life’s circumstances. There is a lively back and forth of listening, talking, questions, and learning.
So of course, at times counseling and spiritual direction can have some overlap, though the tone and purpose of the time spent has quite a different focus. Neither counseling nor spiritual direction is right or wrong, but rather is about where God is leading you for this season of your life. We hope we can guide you with either method into a greater experience of God’s grace and love, whichever is right for you.
What if I do not know much about God?
We welcome anyone into the care we provide whether you have a relationship with Jesus or not. We would love to have the opportunity to help you know who Jesus is and help you dive deeper into your relationship with God, regardless of where you stand with Him now. With that in mind though, we want to be up front with you that we come with a Biblical perspective, involving prayer, scripture and conversations about Jesus as we work with you.
What do you believe about God?
Here is our brief doctrinal statement:
We believe that Jesus Christ is God, who came and lived a perfect life in the flesh. We believe He died on behalf of all humanity, and that He rose again on the third day, conquering sin and death.
We believe that each person is born with sin and must confess and repent of their sins and come to a clear belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection on their behalf to spend eternity with God.
We believe that learning to walk in a daily relationship with Jesus Christ is how we can live a life of freedom and peace here on earth.
We believe the Holy Spirit resides in each believer and offers us life and power as we learn to walk under His guidance. We believe that all the gifts of the Spirit are in operation today.
We believe the Bible is God’s final authority for truth in the world today and thus must rely on its inspired guidance.
We also believe that the enemy, Satan, is real and active in the world today. Thus in our practice of Biblical counseling, we may use learned techniques of deliverance, with consent, to aid in total healing of the body, mind, and spirit.
